Welcome to The Trussell Trust's 2010 Summer Camp blog thingy. For a decade now the Trust has run a summer camp for the children of Lipnitsa Orphanage/School situated near to Botevgrad, Bulgaria. Every summer the school closes and for many of the children who live there this means returning to Roma familes who cannot afford to look after them, isolated rural homes or even for a few, the streets. These kids are exposed to extreme poverty, criminal activity and some are abused by drunken family members. Our summer camp gives these children a taste of a regular childhood. 10 days at the seaside with regular meals (something most of them do not experience at home), clean comfortable beds and people who want to spend time with them just to play and have fun.

Each year we give an opportunity for young people from the UK to join our Youth Team and help look after and entertain the children. this is a great chance to see anew country and experience something new. This year's team are: Grace Percey and Shaun Hill- both veterans of 2009 SC. Lauren Anthony and Becki Hannam- the newbies. Rich Parsons is with the team in his capacity as Bulgaria Operations Manager and will be visiting our exciting new Gabrovo project on the 23rd. Mimi Georgieva is our chief translator/fixer and Valya, Peter and Bogi make up the translator team. We are thrilled once again to welcome Pete Cole, of Salt & Light Ministries, to our team. Pete brings huge juggling skill and great story telling ability to the team and was a (Mr) BIG hit with the kids last year.

Today was a long day of travel for the Youth Team (YT), many of whom returned from Soul Survivor at mid-night. Sadly a 0650 flight from Gatwick meant we had to leave Salisbury at a rather unreasonable 0230. Yawn. And why did the family with the baby have to sit next to us?

Our afternoon was great fun though. Together with the residents of the House of Joshua, our first residential training project for state orphanage leavers, we went to the nearby river and had great fun swimming and picking stones out of our feet...

Tomorrow is a preparartion day when we need to gather some more arts and crafts materials for our afternoon fun session with the kids.

We'll keep you posted with stories from the camp and pictures too.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated towards the cost of the camp- I hope that as you read this and see the pics you will get to understand wgat a difference you have made for these children this summer.
