Aren't cheap flights great? They do save some money but the team have been on the go since 01.45 this morning  so we feel a bit faded.

However, who's got time to be tired when we have the exciting prospect of 3,881 Christmas boxes to be unloaded tomorrow in Sofia? The truck is already here so we will be ready to get on with the job together with some volunteers that Tedy (The Trussell Trust's National Development Co-ordinator in Bulgaria) has found for us.

It was really good to see Tedy and Mimi again. Both are Christmas box veterans now but they are still excited about the arrival of the gifts from Salisbury. They have been talking to various orphanage directors and liasing with Roma communities and other Bulgaria based NGO's with whom we partner to try and make sure that all the boxes our friends in the UK and USA(!) have donated find good homes. A lot of the people that we talk to are really very touched by the generosity of those who have made the boxes and many wonder why we are even interested in them or those they are responsible for. Many of the children we will visit over the next two weeks are the forgotten members of a society that still has so many unanswered questions about itself after the collapse of communism 20 years ago. The legacy of those decades spent under Soviet influence still exacts a heavy price on those at the margins of Bulgarian life; so many young people sent to institutions because of disability or economic hardship. A Christmas present may not change the world but it does bring a little joy into theirs.

Anyways, Sophia, Lizzie and Rich are excited by all that is to come (although Rich tries to hide this) and are really looking forward to getting stuck in tomorrow...
