Wednesday, January 20, 2010

I stir my coconut shake with a pink straw and listen
to a German family interacting, sitting behind my seated back. It is dark
outside, past 8PM. The moon is just a slither of curved, diluted light
and it hangs over the Andaman sea to the west. A few more people sit in front
of me at a small bar made completely of concrete. To my front left a TV
broadcasts some Thai news with no one watching. My dinner just arrived and it
is chicken, cashews, veggies and rice. It is delicious. I wonder if it is
possible to live off of this food forever? A Thai man walks by me with a plate
of French fries. I know its for the German children cause it’s quiet behind me
now. When I finish my dinner in 5 minutes I will go back to my bungalow and
finish reading the last pages of my book, “The road” by Cormac McCarthy. He won
the Pulitzer prize for fiction in 2007. I believe a movie has been made of it.
I should mention that I am back on the island of Koh Lanta again. I missed “the
beach life”. I arrived here yesterday from a small town called Krabi and before
that Bangkok from Chaing Mai. I flew because I didn’t want to spend more than 2
days on the train. Think I’m getting lazy or old, or content, or spoiled, or
feeble or something. Nonetheless I am efficient. No. I am just lazy. I am back
in my bungalow now and in the distance I hear the cries of a child. Maybe
somewhere fries have been spilled. The wind has picked up now and it will be
good for sleeping tonight especially for me in my hut as the straw roof is open
to the front and back allowing for air flow. A nice welcome from the days

Tomorrow I will move to a different resort, about 5
kilometers down road to a beach that is long with white sand and little debris,
perfect for walking or running. The swimming is excellent there as well, can
swim in both full and low tide with little corral to worry about slicing skin

I am laying here on my bed, incased and protected by a
mosquito net of course, and wondering what the hell kind of mattress I’m
sleeping on. Its as hard as concrete. Could it in fact be concrete? It feels
like concrete. It doesn’t have any give to it, so its possible it could be
concrete. Okay so its not really concrete, but whatever it is, it surprised me
when I awoke this morning and my back felt fine.

The photographs of me and the very large bowl of
mystery food, is of a masterpiece of fruit, home-made yogurt and muesli from
the resort I stayed in Pai, northern Thailand. There are over 25 pieces of
fresh organic ingredients that no other on the planet will you find. It may be
the best, most single dish of food ever created. So much in fact that I had
ordered a double upon my arrival and the staff got a big kick out of it, they
even gave me a large salad spoon for my glutton consumption.
