Early start and short trip down the coast to Monaco. Second smallest country in the world. Place of tax evasion The Prince of Monaco must give his permission to live here ( Mick Jagger was denied) Beautiful morning sun sparkling on the ocean.

A quick stop , through the church at the Palace and off out before too many crowds. Wow the place reeks of money. A drive along some of the Grand Prix route. Past more money in yachts than NZ s GNP( at a guess ) Then fantastic scenery along the coast to Pisa ... 167 tunnels and too many corners to count

Enter tunnel in France and out in Italy.

Ahh Italy. Olive trees, terraced slopes, majestic mountains, heat, tiny beaches below us, toll bridges, sunflower beds. We passed the marble cliffs from which Micheal Angelo's "David" was taken and on through the landscape to Pisa... First built 12 th century and its lean progressing. A tower which has been closed to the public since 1990 and millions spent by the engineers of Italy to find a solution to stops its progressive lean ... Steel bands around it, weights attached to counteract gravity, freezing the ground beneath in order to put a concrete support beneath it and over the last ten years extraction of earth in the hope the tower will settle back but nothing has helped correct its lean.

Well have to say the tower and plaza of Pisa are exceptional. Such beautiful design and intricate work. I really didn't expect the tower to be so beautiful. All the buildings in the square worth the visit. The place is surrounded by tourist shops and cafes. Busy, hot, loud. Cute little open " trains " to transport us from the coach parking all added to the delight of Pisa.

Finally we arrived in Montecatini our stop for the evening. An after dinner walk ... Debbie and Anne continued up the funicular to visit the old town while I opted for some peace and quiet
