Kimby and I agonized about where to go. Should we rent a car, should we go north first, train, bus,....it was sooooo hard to make up our minds. Finally we just thought to go ahead and go to Slovenia. We hung out in Trieste a little before we had to get the bus and then only had to sit a few hours to get to Ljublijana. What a great city. A little river runs through it with great cafes lining the edges and cool old buildings. We went to one restaurant the first night that did not have a menu...they preferred to "have a conversation" about the food. It was sort of hard since we wanted to try local stuff but we didn't know what the local stuff was. At least they spoke english well, that made the "conversation" a little easier. We went up to the little town of Bled the next day. It has a gorgeous lake with a church in the middle. We spent the day walking around the lake, took a boat to the island, and had a drink at Tito's old summer house. We were still stressing about how we were going to get down to Croatia, bus or car...we asked a rental car guy and he said we would be "stupid" to rent a car to another country, which we agreed with right away. So, Kimby handily discovered that there was a train going to exactly where we wanted to go, problem solved!
