Just got back from a port wine tasting at a fantastic place called 'maison du port' owned by a french guy. I got a great lesson in port and tried alot of different kinds, so I am having trouble typing.....Porto is another beautiful old city on the Douro river, an old trading town. More old buildings built tightly together on steep hills. Beautiful delis full of cheeses, and now, giant chocolate easter eggs, and bread with ham in it, I think. Stayed in another cheapy place on the main square with a view out to the plaza...really loud portuguese ladies there last night next door to me..it was like they never even took a breath, the talking just went on and on! then I just lightly knocked on the door and suddenly they went hush, I should have done that a alot earlier...maybe they had been tasting port too. Took a boat ride and a huge crowd of students got on, looked like some kind of initiation of new students, older ones in black capes and younger ones in wierd yellow shorts, I guess they were from a medical school in Porto. Anyway, they were funny and sang the whole way down the river.
