So, I couldn't get into libya (they stopped giving americans visas) so I went to england for a pit stop and decided to come the Azores. It is a place I have always wanted to visit, so it fits into the theme of this giant trip...and maybe it is a little more laid back than libya? I have to say, it has been pretty funny to get all the responses from people with a tone of disappointment that I am in europe. Sorry to let you down and not be suffering in the third world all the time!!!! Isn't seven months of crazy bugs and no sidewalks enough!!?? But I happen to be very excited to be in europe. I haven't been here for a really long time, and I love it here.
The Azores are a group of nine volcanic islands, very green, lots of cows, and farmers in galoshes and jaunty caps. It is beautiful, and a great place to walk. It is so rural, you can get out on a country road and walk for hours only seeing cows and beautiful views of ocean and green hills. I stayed on Terceira the first two nights, walked, rented a car, visited a winery and walked around the main town.
Then I came to the island of Sao Jorge, much less populated and a walkers paradise. My legs are killing me from five hours a day of down hill, stone path, gravel road walking! The idea is that you get a taxi driver to take you to the beginning of a walk, and then, say 6 hours later, have him pick you up at the other end while you are finishing up your delicious fish lunch at the local restaurante. I have had fun, even when I got lost on one walk and got delayed by an hour. I was feeling very smart, walking on cow paths, crossing streams, all to no end. Lesson learned...go back to where the path made sense and you will find your way! duh!!!
