After more than a week of hot and sticky beach weather it was time to head to the hills! The Usumbara mountains are just a few hours away, full of villages and cultural tourism walks. Lisa came with me for the first two days which was great, I wish she could have hung around longer! We headed to Soni, to Maweni farm, which was a super lovely place to stay. Tons of birds coming back to their cool reed nests at night, nice talks with the swedish filmaker owner, Lars, and a great walk around the mountain. I continued my stay in the mountains with a guide for a three day walk. The first day we walked for about 4 hours, then caught a bus to a town with a convent and stayed in rooms there. next day we walked about 6 hours to Mtae, a village hanging out on the edge of the hills with a great view of the plains below. I stayed there two nights, so the third day was spent walking all around the local area, trying sugar cane wine with the old men and eating ugali (cornmeal mush with sauce) and chips mayay(french fries cooked in an omellette), and my all time favorite, drinking Stoney Tangawizi, a really good ginger soda.
