From Vang Vieng we headed to the capital by so called VIP bus (look at the picture). It was a bit of a squash and I spent the whole 3 hours worried that my bag would fall off the roof.
We had a bit of a walk round the place before we settled on a place to stay. The Thawee Guesthouse was a vast improvement on the last place and in a suitable location. For our first evening we went for a curry at Khop Chai Deu which was very good and cheap. With little nightlife we headed back to our room and watched Spiderman 3 well Ryan did I fell asleep! The next day we did a bit of admin in the morning then went for lunch at the restaurant we ate at the previous night. After a downpour we headed to the morning market for an hour. After we spent time chilling out in our room, as there isn't much to do in town, most things are on the outskirts. Before going to tea we phoned home on the worst line i've ever encountered...although highly amusing at times. For tea we ate at Sticky Fingers again a nice little place. That evening we watched Ocean's 13 on telly.
For our last full day in Laos we did absolutely zilch. The only thing worth mentioning is having tea at the Swedish Pizza Bakehouse. Our bus to take us to the border was due to pick us up at 5-5:30 but turned up at 6:05, I was getting a little stressed by this point. The little bus took us to the border where we cleared customs and got on a huge VIP bus that took us overnight to Bangkok. Laos wasn't on our original plan for the trip but i'm so glad we did it, it was worth it, a great country. More thumbnails ...
