Drove up to the look out on the big hill in Roanoke this morning and had a look at the huge star built on top as well as the view over the city...

Then hit the road and drove along US81 all the way to Washington DC.
We were doing 75mph when this one went past

We stuck to the major road despite the traffic to save time and the views along the freeway were great. Lots of open country with rolling hills and many very nice looking ranches - mostly beef cattle with a couple of dairies - and lots of crops being grown. Quite a prosperous looking region.

We stopped at a place called Natural Bridge where there is a natural feature of the same name, but they wanted 20 bucks each to see it!
                                                           Which one is the Grizzly?
The freeway into Washington was choked with traffic although it was early and accommodation was hard to find, so we settled on a Best Western hotel about 5 miles from the City centre but only a short distance from a rail station. The area is a bit seedy and the hotel is old but it will have to do. We won't be spending much time here apart from sleeping anyway.
Tomorrow we are touring all the major attractions here in the capital.
