I was up by 5 am to see the sunrise at the great Buddhist temple, Borobudor. This is supposed to be one of the great sights in Asia, the only trick being this requires light from the sun, which was missing due to the dark and thick clouds that were covering the skies this morning! Borobudor, the world's largest Buddhist temple, is a massive multi-storied pyramid-style temple nestled in the middle of a tropical jungle setting. It was built about 800 AD and is considered one of the 3 wonders of classical southeast Asia. The 10 levels of the temple represent the 10 stages of the Buddhist cosmic system. The stone carving in the sides of the walls depict reincarnation and quests for truth and enlightenment. It's a really ancient and beautiful place...too bad the sun wasn't cooperating.
After visiting Borobudor for a while, our group traveled to Prambanan, the ninth century Hindu temple complex dedicated to the Hindu gods: Shiva the Destroyer (think Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), Vishnu the Protector, Brahma the Creator, and Ganesha, who is the God of many things (order, education, wisdom, etc.). Unfortunately, the main temples were under preservation construction, but I was still able to climb around on them and visit the insides of many of the temples. There are also many surrounding temples, many destroyed from the eruption of local volcano Mt. Merapi, which went off in a big way in the year 1006. Overall, it was great to see, but a bit disappointing because of the way people and the travel books build it up so much, you start to believe that it will be this absolutely amazing thing...or maybe I've just seen too many places in Asia and am just accustomed to these things by now!
