I took the 2.5 hour train from Taipei to Hualien, on Taiwan's eastern coast and near Taroko Gorge, Taiwan's premier national park. Hualien is a cool little near-the-beach town where the best thing to do is just rent a scooter and ride around exploring places. I stayed at Amigos hostel and was the only guest, hence deemed myself the VIP. The owners were cool and had a dog, Migos, who I got to rassle around with. The next day I'll go to Taroko, so I basically just putted around the city and went to the beach, some historical musuem, a lame tribal dance exhibition, and had a great dinner of 'bien shu'...wow, I've been in Asia for so long now that I just realized I don't actually know how to descrinbe my meal in English because I'd describe it as a mix of "xiao mai' (Chinese) with a 'gyoza' (Japanese) layering and a 'kalbi tang' (Korean) soup! Since that's probably only funny to me :) let's just say it was great and is really a local rarity because no one I met in the massive city of Taipei had ever heard of it!
