Sunday, after work, Joe, Tomoko and I decide to go try Chinatown in Kobe. Joe is a fellow teacher from the States and Tomoko is one of our students, a travel agent who was very helpful when I was going back for my uncle's funeral. Chinatown was interesting, but there was nothing totally new or particularly striking about it.
This weeks main outing was a hiking trip to eastern Kyoto (with Bill) and a trip the silver temple, Ginkakuji. The hike was pretty cool, although a little treacherous due to the previous nights rain. It turns out that this hike leads to one of the better views of Kyoto, although, the day was still hazy and overcast, so my pictures don't do it justice. The only relevant part of the hike was when I slipped and fell down the muddy path, injuring my groin and scratching myself up a bit! I was hoping Bill had his camera out and snapped a pic, but no luck...it had to luck pretty damn funny, me sliding down the mountain trying to stop myself in the mud all the while holding the trail map up in one hand in order not to lose it! After hiking a bit, we took the famous Philosopher's Walkway toward Ginkakuji temple. This walkway runs parallel to the eastern mountains and passes many other smaller temples, affording a great view, a pleasant walking path, and many photo opportunities! Basically, we reached the temple and cruised around its gardens for an hour or so and pretty much just headed home for the day.
Next week begins Hanami, which is the Japanese tradition of getting extremely drunk in the park while sitting under cherry blossom trees and stuffing your face with food. More to follow...
