After leaving Barmouth, we headed to Harlech Castle in Harlech (well, where else would it have been I suppose?!).
Yes, we know what you're thinking ... yet another castle ruins - aren't you guys sick of castle ruins by now?! Well yeah, but this one was supposed to be perched high up on a hill, with great 360 degree views. Besides, there isn't really much else to see in Wales - besides the scenery, which is great (along the way to each castle ruin)!
Unfortunately, the castle itself was certainly not as good as some of the ones we'd seen previously, but it was really tall, with some pretty good views.
Our next stop was all the way up at the top of Wales, at a place called Conwy. We were going to visit a medieval house (not a ruin, this one was actually done up as it was in the middle ages), but unfortunately it was already shut for the winter. This is a problem we are going to encounter a lot on this leg of our trip.
We didn't want to do ANOTHER castle, so we settled for a quick walk on top of the town's walls (which were mostly still intact) and a look around the medieval buildings in town. We even saw 'the smallest house in Great Britain'!
From there we decided that besides castles, we were happy that we'd seen all that we wanted to see in Wales. We decided to make the three hour drive back into England & upwards towards Carlisle.
Unfortunately, we missed a lot of excellent opportunities to do some great hikes (and rides for Ian) due to our coming over so late in the season. But as I said before, the scenery was quite breathtaking in some places.
We also believe we were extremely lucky with the weather over here in Wales.
