Our 6 hour trip on the bus was well taken care of with a hefty amount of sleep (I wonder why?!) ... and watching Transformers on the tv - IN ENGLISH! (very rare! Most of our viewing options so far have been old Steven Segal & Dolph Lundgren movies, in Spanish & generally with no subtitles).

Peurto Varas was a really nice town, right on the edge of the massive Lake Llanquihue, with two active volcanos in easy view (one only about 20kms away!) Luckily, neither erupted whilst we were there, although another one - Chaiten - about 150km away did, and we were told that if the weather changer direction, our town would have been completely covered in ash! We're guessing you guys must have seen or heard something on the news.

Anyway, we only really had one day to do anything, so 8 of us put our heads (and money) together, and decided to pack a picnic lunch (chicken & cheese rolls ... and vino, of course!) and hire bikes for the afternoon. It was great fun. We had the bikes for about four hours and rode to the next town & back. We even befriended (or should I say 'got befriended by') one of the local town dogs and she ran with us the entire trip!!!! We named her Skippy (after the famous kangaroo), coz it was like she was talking to us and leading us along ... well we had a map to follow, but we all know what great luck we've had with them so far! Skippy kept running along in front (like she knew where she was going), then checking back to see that we were ok, before running on ahead again.

On our last night (not only there, but in Chile as well!), we decided to buy more supplies and just stay home. We ate & drank out on the hostel's varandah, which was high up and had a nice view of the town and the lake below.

It was an enjoyable night before another early bus the next day ...

Argentina, here we come!!!!
