The famous Nasca ... and not the car racing!

On the way to Nasca we stopped at an oasis in the desert of sdand dunes called Huacachina. It really was like something out of the movies - sand everywhere with a small lagoon with green foliage plonked in the bottom of a valley! We had a very nice lunch, then took the opportunity to go for a sand buggy ride & to do some sandboarding. The sand was stinking hot, but it was heaps of fun. The concensus amongst the girls was that Ian was the best of the boys attempting to stand up & sand board (the rest of us went down on our bellies!)
Just out of Nasca we stopped at a tower that allows you to walk up & view some of the famous Nasca Lines (those crazy symbols in the sand that nobody can really explain!) We saw the ´hands´and the ´tree´. It wasn´t bad, but it just made us more keen to go up and see it from a plane.
We stayed the night in Nasca, then were at the airport for 7am to see the Lines from the air. Five of us piled into a tiny cessna and away we went. It was really awesome. Took a million photos ... hope some are good enough for you guys to see! The flight lasted 30 minutes and was well worth the 40 US dollars each. Killed the afternoon by the pool, breaking it up with occasional bouts of eating and shopping. It was pretty warm - so the pool was definitely the best place to be. We were due to leave on the night bus to Ariquipa at 10pm ... when it finally arrived at just before midnight, we were on our way! An hour´s worth of 80s video classic s (gee, that Michael Bolton was soooo hot!) and we were all ready for some sleep.
Today in Ariquipa we tried our first Guinea Pig!!!! Surprise, surprise, it tastes just like chicken! After lunch we went to a museum display for ´Juanita - the beautiful girl of Ampato´. It was really interesting, all about how the Incas sacrificed and buried children in Peruvian volcanoes to please the gods. The bodies of more than a dozen children have been found all over the country, but Juanita is the most preserved of all of them. To see hair & teeth & clothes, etc from over 500 years ago was really quite amazing! Well, better go. We have a group meeting to attend. Adios More thumbnails ...
