After being away for about a year and a half, I was still enjoying myself and in no rush to head home. Sure, I missed my family and friends, but I was loving London and looking forward to a Christmas with some new found friends in the backpacker's hostel I was living in. The plans were set! It was going to be a drunken, probably turkeyless binge drink off in London with a short and hopefully sober call home to the rellies before kicking it all off.
But life as a travel agent has a few good things... spending all of your down time looking for flights combined with a yearly £300 bonus to spent on such flights combined with my finding a cheap flight to Toronto over Xmas for 15 days equalled - a Christmas at home! But better than that... a SURPRISE Christmas at home!
I schemed and arranged to be picked up at the airport by some mates and got them to drop me off a bit down the street at about 1am on December 15th. Luckily, my mum's birthday is that day and she was having a small party. Even luckier... the party was still raging by the time I got home!
So I snuck around the side of the house, opened the back door and crept into the front room for my big appearance. Not a soul in there knew I was due to come home and as I walked in, nobody really even gave me any notice.
One of my mum's friends was actually standing in between her and I, and who knows what my dad was up to, so there was actually a bit of a delay before my mum's friend yelled out and my parents freaked.
They each thought the other set it up and the look in their eyes was so great! If you've ever got a chance to truly rock up unannounced and unexpected - do it! Best thing I've ever done.
