The economical capital of India, Bollywood, the largest slum in Asia, and many more things you can say about Mumbai. One other thing is that Mumbai is expensive, especially accommodation but also alcohol and food and sticking to a tight budget is difficult here. My thinking is that there are days and places which are cheaper so you will save money and in other places you just have to spend a bit more.

For me it was the city where I bought new flip-flops and ofcourse I did more because I have been to Elephanta island to see the caves there. Then walked around in the city and traveled by bus, train, rikshaw and taxi to see the Dharavi slum and 'The Wall Project'. The latter is a 3 km wall in the middle of the city which is painted by artists and where everybody can demonstrate their talent. I also tried as you can see in the picture.

I had one nice (but expensive) evening with a Dutch couple I met on the boat from Elephanta island and they were really cool people so we talked a lot and discovered the Mumbai nightlife a bit. Mumbai is not that bad I can say!

Practical stuff

-          Do not go to Elephanta island if you will see more caves later in Ajanta or Ellora for example. The caves on Elephanta are quite disappointing and will cost you precious time and money.

-          Use the Mumbai train network, fun, cheap and effective.
