Ever since the Beatles been to this town in the '60s to visit an Ashram Rishikesh is a magnet for spiritual seekers and names the ‘Yoga Capital of the World'. Not a bad reason to stop by I would say. The city is positioned along the Ganges river and feels good with its hang bridges and temples scattered around.

I met up again with my Dutch friend Aron and he guided me to the OM Hotel for 150 Rupees a night, a bargain. The whole city breaths spiritually and every 20 meters you can find a Yoga, Massage, Reiki or Meditation place to go to. Also the people here are as we say in Dutch ‘zweverig’ and many come here for numerous weeks to practice Yoga or find their inner selves. I am not one of them but was still curious about Yoga and those other things so I joined some Yoga classes.

I know I am not the most agile person but in the Yoga classes it became very evident. Every person (mostly women) was doing all crazy movements and could put their head between their legs while standing straight and all other crazy poses. I was 10 - 50 cm short on every exercise we did but tried my best. I actually felt that I became more agile in even 2 to 3 days so Yoga is an interesting thing really. Also tried Meditation but sitting still for more than 10 minutes without thinking of ‘the present’ is not my cup of tea. Yoga however showed its advantages and at least I have been intrigued by it.

In Rishikesh was also the possibility for rafting so couldn’t resist that as well. It was more thrilling than I expected and I enjoyed the few hours although the water of the Ganges was too cold for me to jump in.

Practical stuff

-          OM Hotel is recommended but whatever you choose make sure you stay close to the Lakshman Jhula bridge where all the action is.
