Udaipur is called 'The Venice of the East' and is indeed a very nice city on relaxing Lake Pichola. The James Bond movie ‘Octopussy’ is partly shot here because of the floating Lake Palace, extraordinary to see. The main tourist site is the City Palace Museum and there were LOTS of tourists here, foreigners but also many Indians. Ofcourse I had to visit this but it was not very special, the crowds did not make it any better though. The Jagdish temple which is in the middle of town was even more interesting despite its size.
The second day was also relaxed but started with a totally new experience for me, riding a horse! For (even less then) 10 euro (650 Rs) I was picked up from my hotel, 20 minute ride by scooter, 2 hours horse riding, cup of tea, and 20 min ride back to the hotel. Although I knew how to ride a camel, a horse feels stronger and more agile. Just walking was no problem but at the end we did some galloping and that is something special. Even if you pace up a little it looks like you are going 100 miles an hour and you bump up and down on the horse holding yourself as tight as you can. My guide said that I did very well for a first time and I had a good balance and relaxing way of ‘steering’. Rada as the name of my horse and she treated me well which I very much appreciated.
- Don’t pay 200 Rs extra for your camera at the City Palace Museum because it’s not worth it.
- Ganesha guest house is definitely recommended and Gudu the owner is a nice guy who can assist you with everything you need.
