From Aksum to Lalibela is far so it took me 2 days to get there after spending one night in Woldia. But it is worth it! Lalibela is an ancient world of 11 medieval rock-hewn churches which are almost a thousand years old! They are completely made out of 1 piece of rock from the top down and some took 25 years to build.

I arrived at 9 am and found out that besides my couchsurf host Ute there were also 2 other couchsurfers from Israel names Gil and Ya-el. So after breakfast I already made the tour with them to all 11 churches. For the history freaks I will sum them up here:

-          Northwestern group; Bet Methane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Golgotha, Bet Mikael.

-          Southeastern group; Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanuel, Bet Abba Libanos, Bet Giyorgis.

It was a full day of sightseeing but it is a very special place and many times you are thinking that it would be amazing if you could see how they made this wonders back then.

In the evening went for some dinner with the whole gang and that would be the last time we would spent together since they were going on a 3 day hike trip. I enjoyed myself alone the next day and spent another day in this nice town of Lalibela. Then I heard that there was a special ceremony at night at the ancient churches so I also stayed there for an hour to witness this spectacle.

Practical stuff

-          I would recommend the Jordan guesthouse behind the Blulale Restaurant. Place with hot showers for 100 Birr (I negotiated to 80 birr J)
