From Gondar to Aksum was a long but beautiful ride through numerous mountains and with a spectacular view on the Simien Mountains in the east. Aksum is one of the most important and spectacular ancient sites of Sub Saharan Africa and this is something not to be missed while in Ethiopia. Unless this great importance the sites are not very spectacular. There are various Stelae (Obelisks) which are nice to see and the most interesting is how they could craft and even more erect those enormous pillars. Apart from the Stelae there are tombs and churches as well as the bath of Queen Sheba. When walking around with a guide you get a lot of history and it becomes a lot more to life and will increase your satisfaction.

Together with my Dutch friends Eelko and Ernst-Jan I did this tour and spend 1,5 d in Aksum. Besides the sightseeing a boring city and it is hard to believe that it was once a powerful kingdom.

Practical stuff

-          The Africa hotel has decent prices and you can even get a room for 100 Birr although the public (cold) showers are not very fancy.
