From Sossusvlei the direction pointed south towards the Fish River Canyon to star our 5 day hike. Because we started off late from Sossusvlei we could only make it to the small town (30 habitants) of Helmeringhausen. There are 2 routes to do this and DEFENITELY take the C27 along the Namib/ Naukluft National Park. This is a 250 km gravel road with the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen. Hundreds of mountains and a road flowing through grasslands with some game like springboks, giraffes and zebra's. Laurens and me enjoyed every kilometer although the road was not in best shape.

At 17.30 we reached the 'town’ of Helmeringhausen and knocked on the door at the local hotel. It looked like we could get a not too expensive room so we moved in and got some dinner. It turned out that this price was per person so we decided to put up our tent again and sleep there during the cold night. Woke up several times due to the cold and in the morning the car and tent were frozen which means it was about -1 or -2 degrees!!

Next day continued our way towards the Fish River Canyon and stopped for fuel and some shopping in Keetmanshoop, the last civilized place before going to Ai-Ais.

Practical stuff

-          When going to or coming from Sossusvlei and going to the south TAKE THE C27 route. This is the most beautiful scenic road you have ever seen and definitely don’t wanna miss!!!?!?!
