In stead of 1 hour it took me 2,5 hours and a flat tire to get to Mongu. Met up with Greta who I contacted via couchsurf and her friends Nick, Inga, Laurynas from Lithuania and Bulgaria. They are working as volunteers here for an HIV/AIDS association as DI's (Development Instructors). I was curious after the work they did so asked if I could come along for an afternoon so I did. Together with Greta and a Zambia woman from the office we went to a suburb of Mongu to meet with a group of HIV positive people. After praying we could start the session and Greta asked a lot of questions about sex, hygiene, eating behaviour etc. Some things they knew and others Greta had to explain. When the session ended we had a big box of condoms (600) which we gave to the people. I had the privilege of giving away the other 100 condoms we had to people in the street hahaha... This I really liked and made a bit of a conversation and handed the condoms to some men and women. Also educated some of them a bit in how to use them.
In the afternoon played a game of basketball, we (Nick, Laurynus and me) against 3 Zambians and WE WON!! Not because of me by the way.. Next day again on the road back to the civilized world of Lusaka.
Practical stuff
  • There are lots of buses from Mongu to Lusaka in the morning and you can bargain about the price. I agreed on 80.000 in stead of 100.000.
