We woke up early to give ourselves plenty of time to find Brown and park, which was a smart move. After a student-led tour, we didn't stay for the crowded info session, hoping to hit the Brown bookstore for souvenirs before we raced to our next stop, Williams. Unfortunately, it was some Rhode Island state holiday today, so the bookstore was closed. Typical Providence House

  Nota bene: If you ever find yourself in Providence and you want to visit Brown, do not attempt to drive to campus in a 38-foot RV. The streets are curvy, narrow, and encased in trees, not to mention the fact that the school is located on top of what's called "College Hill." More like a mountain, it seemed to us. Brown 18

Campus: Decent, small campus in a nice city, but nothing exciting. It was short on old, pretty buildings, and there was lots of construction. My parents noticed immediately that this was the dirtiest of the campuses we'd been to, a trait which I hadn't picked up on. Score: 2.5 out of 5 Brown 21

Academics: Very flexible, but so much so that it has a reputation for being lazy. I need rigor. Other than that, a new Institute for Ancient Studies opens next year, which is interesting, and apparently lots of opportunities for research and study. Score: 4 out of 5. Brown 19

Financial: Like all the Ivy's, it's expensive but has lots of aid available. We didn't get much info other than that. Score: 4 out of 5. Brown 17
