At 8:00, we left Rome and began our journey south toward the Amalfi Coast. It was a pretty drive (when I was awake) - plenty of Apennine mountains and small towns seen from a bus. We took a neat stop in the outskirts of Naples to visit a cameo factory. Cameos are made of shell or coral and then intricately carved by masters of the dying art. They were quite lovely to see! I loved looking at and admiring them but they had a hefty price tag - too much for a teenager like me.
I saw Vesuvius today. A looming and dangerous giant, the volcano demands respect from Neapolitans and tourists alike. Imagine; for centuries, people have been building towns and cities around a time bomb - yet they ignore the ever-present danger. Pompeii did it and paid dearly for it.

I bought two lovely broaches at the Pompei Cameo and Coral Factory for about 200 E. each. I got billed $850.92 on my visa. The exchange rate is bad, but I believe they double billed me. BEWARE!!!!!!

My wife and I were in Naples. If this cameo shop is part of the Rome Pompeii tour and next to a restuant, We were there. I bought my wife a blue back and white cameo with a lady and a child. I paid $500 American. I should say when my wife asked the price she took it off and said it was too much. I told her we are here now get the ring ad as a memory. I thought the workma ship was great, if it is the same place. I remeber his son was learning the trade fromhis fathre. jposs@dc.rr.com
