We walk back along the beach, past where we originally joined, to the other end to see if we could get any more joy that way. After clambering across the rocks this end, we come to another sheltered cove, but again no way of going any further – so we decide to stay in the cove, eat our lunch and relax for a while.
After lunch we walk back to the monastery, take a look at the map and decide to drive out on another piece of headland to a lighthouse – I like doing this because you often find wild stretches of coastline that are nice for walking. The chosen headland is Capo Carbonara and when we get there we find that part of it used to be an old quarry, so we find our way down on a dirt track to the old quarry houses and the quarry itself, which is right beside the sea. We sit on some rocks for a while just listening to the sea and then investigate. I see a path up onto the cliff which seems to lead closer to the lighthouse – which is out on an island of its own. It’s crazy hot today, so the climb up leaves us sweating and thirsty, but the views from the top are worth every second. The lighthouse is much closer now, but once again we are thwarted as there are just too many shrubs and bushes in the way to actually get closer than we were – so we turn back. It was a really enjoyable way to spend the afternoon.
On the way back we drive past a marina, where John decides to wait in the car while I go and have a nose around and take some photos. Early evening we arrive back at the monastery. John finds himself a hammock to lie in and read his book while I go for a swim – extremely refreshing after the heat of the day.
