It is not that easy to find a large cab to take 4 people and 7 bags down the busiest street through Times Square to Penn station at rush hour on a Friday morning. We had to wait for our bell man to find just the right cab.
When we go to Penn station the real waiting began as we had left a goodly amount of time and our train was delayed. We were better off than the Boston trains which were simply cancelled.
The ride was quite pleasant looking out to the outskirts of New
We then caught a suburban train to the airport when we bought our ticket we found that we had missed the previous train by a minute but when we went up to the platform it had not left yet so we boarded.
We then had to wait for the Dollar car hire van to pick us up and take us through to the car hire station. Of course we were talked into an upgrade and we set off in the wrong direction and had to take another detour through the airport before finally set of through the traffic out of Philadelphia. Richard did a really good job of driving on the wrong side of the road even though Susan quite frequently yelled watch out as she thought she was about to run into the curb - it was an adjustment for both driver and front passenger.
Only one wrong turn on the way but still our traveling time was a lot longer than expected. Susan had rung the owner of Carriage Corner to ask if we
could have a meal with an Amish family
We and 4 other travellers were treated to a home cooked meal prepared by Rebecca Zook and her eldest daughters ( there were 6 children in this family).
We ate home made berry yoghurt for starters, Christmas salad, mashed potatoes in brown butter, meatballs, crispy fried chicken, chicken pot pie, grits, sweet corn, blueberry and whole wheat bread and chocolate oat brownie and peach pie with ice cream for desert. There was no electricity so everything was run by gas, solar, or compressed air. We were able to ask questions about their life and enjoyed hearing how and why they live the simple way they do.
