Up until this point, I was having a good week. Work was good this week. We have more vehicles on site now and it is easier for me to get out and on site. Getting out in the field and sharing my knowledge and experience with my staff is what makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something here. Also, knowing it is your last full week before a break, makes the daily grind much more rewarding.
Almost all of the other expats have gone on a golf trip this weekend. They left early Saturday morning. I didn’t go because I’m not a golfer, plus I wanted a quiet weekend to build up my sleep reserves before my break. I didn’t realise until Friday night that they were all taking Saturday off, so I thought if they can take a full day off, then I will at least have a bit of a sleep-in. So, I didn’t get up until 9am and even just those extra 3 hrs made me feel heaps better. I wish I could do that every weekend. I’d rather start work later and finish later.
So I was excited to have a quiet Saturday night. I planned a movie night (watching a movie on my laptop – u wouldn’t try watch a movie on tv cause the electricity is so unreliable it would no doubt go out 10 mins before the concluding scenes of the film)
I’ll be home on Thursday. Mission 1: buy a new phone.
Oh and I almost forgot. The reason behind the entry title: 1 of the expats here goes up to the bar and says “I’ll have a triple double thanks Thomas”...yep, 3 double shots of jack daniels. That’s A LOT of liquor and a drink I never aspire to order.
Interesting Ghana Observations: “You are welcome” and “Good Morning/Afternoon” are statements used more here than I have ever heard in my life. Voice tones are used very expressively – high pitch for surprise or apologetic, a deep “uh ha” for a show of understanding. “Small small” is a common phrase. If u prank call someone to give them ur phone number, this is called “flashing”...yes, I giggle like a school kid when I hear this, especially when the phrase is “can u just flash me”.
