So I visted the Mendel museum, there's a wealth of information about Mendels background, his families financial difficulties and his poor health, his decision to take life as an abbott I'm sure was made easier by the educational benefits and lack of financial burdens it would allow him.. (he also spoke 4 languages, was a bee-keeper - with over 50 sp of bees when he was working there, and a keen astrologer and meterologist...).
The museum only opened in the last few years and the abbey & it's surrounding grounds were taken by the soviet government and converted into a public office, during that time the greenhouse, orangery and apiary were all destroyed, though the foundations of the greenhouse still remain.
The museum has a great interactive section (for those not au fait with the basic laws of Mendelliant genetics) and in a rather kitsch way, all the cushioned seats are X- or Y- shaped.
Other than the Mendel Museum, I have to admit I've not been inspired by Brno, it's the fourth place I've visited in the Czech Republic and it just doesn't compare with the superlative nature of Prague, the provincial 'niceness' of Olomoucs and the completely chilled and almost fairytale of existance of Cesky Krumluv. Brno is a nice town, it has great architecture, street art, fountains etc etc... It's just up against some tough competition.
