Mjlet Island was our second port of call on the sail croatia cruise. (the first being at Makarska on the main land.) We docked in the port town of Polace and there was very little there to see - however most of the island is national park and we hired bikes and cycled up hill (Ok, only one person cycled the rest of us got off and walked!!!) and then found a dirt track that lead us to two of the lakes within the national park. Our entry ticket included a wee ferry ride to an island within the larger of the two lakes that contained the ruins of an old monastery - however being the cultured (australians) folks that we are - we sat and had some local red wine on the island (that was surprisingly sweet!!) before catching the ferry back again...
I cycled around the lake, in the hope that I could make a complete circle - however the lake was actually an inlet from the sea and the 'bridge' that connected the two sides was not wide enough for me to walk over let alone push a bike and I had to return the way I came.
The only surreal thing about the ride around the lake, was that on the way to the end, I felt like I was going down-hill (& and I was not looking forward to the return journey, presuming it to be uphill) however the return (around the lake) was down-hill too!! I can't explain it and I wasn't the only one who noted it!!
