Leaving SLO (San luis obispo) isn't too hard, it's not the most charming of places. On the way out we stop at a gas station to fill up the tank but it takes a while to understand what to do and the clerk at the till wasn't very helpful. We have to pay first then fill and then collect change if there is any... Very confusing if you haven't done it before!

Emily drives us down to Santa Barbara. Along the route we are mostly surrounded by agricultural land, it looks a lot like England. We lose hwy 1 at one point as its so poorly marked on the road, so we take a detour around more of the fields! Santa Barbara is lovely. Spanish designed town with lots of shops and restaurants and delis. We stop at the Savoy cafe which is really good. The staff are really friendly, foods good and the "Kathy's killer krunch brownie" was amazing!

Next it's my shift to drive down to Santa Monica and then to our hotel in L.A. The drive takes us back along the coast. We go through Malibu with its sea view houses literally in the sea. Emily has developed a new bird watching obsession and she takes hundreds of pictures of passing pelicans and gulls. Santa Monica pier is like Blackpool but more beautiful- probably due to the sun to be honest. We walk along the beach and pier, grab some iced drinks and swing on the beach before returning to the road.

We got slightly confused leaving Santa Monica and what was meant to be a 10 min drive to our next hotel in Marina Del Rey took about an hour. Once we'd dumped our stuff at the hotel we headed for Venice beach. Lots of shops selling t-shirts and medical marajuana. Dinner was at Enterprise co. a really cool seafood restaurant and bar. We shared the calamari starter and a 2 lb lobster with grilled veg and fries. Delicious!

After dinner we decided to drive around Hollywood for an hour on a night tour but once again we got a bit lost and ended up circling the streets for about 3 hours. We had a good night tour of Griffith park though...
