16-17 Aug - Got the ferry across to Tasmania. Felt rather sick and couldn't get any sleep in the cruise seats room because 3 beefy men were snoring their heads off. So Mike and me went and slept on the couches in the TV/bar area. Arrived in Devonport at 0700 and drove straight to Cradle Mountain. We immediately compared Tasmania to Somerset back home. Fields everywhere, farms, cattle, crops and it just happened to be drizzly, rainy weather. Lovely to see so much greenery again.
The mountains appeared and we were one of the first cars into the national park. The weather was crap, but we parked up, registered in the book and started the walk up Cradle mountain. There was a boardwalk kind of thing almost all the way up. A way of protecting the land from erosion. That made it a little easier, although it felt like cheating! We all know that we like to make our own pathways up and down mountains - as we did when we climbed Mt Snowdon the year before last... don't we Dan and Tom???!! Just slightly off the beaten track!!!
We went past lakes and falls and saw some strange ferrit looking creature, beige with polka dots.
My trousers decided that they would rip about 500 metres into the walk. I was simply too lazy to walk back to the car though, so went on and had to thaw my leg out when we got back. It started to sleet and snow and got pretty cold as we got nearer the top. Mike wanted to go up to the base of the actual highest peak bit, so Lauz and I started to wonder back down via a different track. We found some clumpy bits of snow and thought it was pretty cool to see snow after being in the sun for such a long time.
We waited in the car for Mike, who came down about an hour later. He had gotten caught in a mild blizzard type storm and found loads of snow.
