I managed to lose the football louts in Rotterdam, and reached Hamburg via Amersvoort and Osnabrook a couple of hours later. I found that the Hotel I'd booked was way out of the centre, but decided I couldn't go to Hamburg without going to the Reeperbahn, where the Beatles played in some pretty seedy clubs back in 1960-2. Oh, what a big mistake. Germany had been playing Costa Rica on opening match of World Cup and the place was knee-deep in the detritus of yob-behaviour, oh oh oh. However, I found a steak-house with (hooefully) bullet-proof glass and had a meal and watched the crowds outside... Riot police everywhere. Street-walkers tripping over themselves.

In fact, the Hotel was a little oasis. More of a rooming-house on the third floor of a large old building. The proprietor had gone by the time I had arrived in the evening and I was let in by the porter who looked after the whole building which contained four other similar "hotels". The porter handed me a note from the proprietor which included :

"Breakfast is served from 6:30 to noon. Please note the breakfast will be served by our deaf waitress, Please talk to her face to face so she will be able to read all your requests from your lips."
