Thursday morning I set off from Passau alongside the Danube, crossing the River Inn which joins it here, and alongside which I'd driven frequently on my way skiing. The weather was overcast, and I stopped for a rest after an hour, just as it started to rain. My heart sank, but apart from another brief shower entering Linz, that was the last of the bad weather.
It was a lovely ride, with the hills getting steeper and steeper leading down to the valley until I got to Schlongen where the river does a complete "S", cutting through the hills and leaving no room for a pathway. The only way forward was on a ferry, and as I waited the 45 minutes for it to appear a veritable United Nations of cyclists appeared; Dutch, Italian, German and myself. There was discussion about the best route, maps were consulted, plans exchanged.
I decided to press on to Linz, and although tired (it was almost 100km in the day), was really glad that I did. It's a wonderful City, and I found a comfortable Hotel with a room overlooking the main square and had an excellent meal at a very friendly Italian Restaurant.
