By Boat to Mainz

The guide book said that the road past Boppard was full of traffic and narrow, and I wanted to see the great castles along the way, so decided to travel through the gorge by boat; but the weather continued to be dreadful so I seriously considered waiting a day for better views. The forecast was for all-day rain for the following five days, so that wasn't an option so on Monday I took the boat to Mainz. The 6½-hour journey might have been a bit boring, but I met up with a young New Yorker and we chattered away occasionally braving the rain to take a photo when we saw the opportunity.
