Sunday was mainly dry, although the wind continued, and I went past Linz and into the deepening valley towards Koblenz. The riverside villages became prettier, and there were a few castles. It being Sunday, there were celebrations of one kind or another going on in some of the villages. At Andernach there was a music-and-beer festival and lots of oom-pah-pah brass band music. There were also loads of cyclists. Some, like me, were kitted out for long journeys; others were of the lycra variety, and a lot of families and cycle-groups. In places, the cycle-path was really quite crowded.

I stopped in Koblenz for a while, and nearly made a big mistake leaving when I started off alongside the Moselle (which runs into the Rhine at Koblenz). I got back on track and headed on between steepening valley sides now covered with vineyards. The roads, cycle track and railway all get squeezed as the valley gets steeper, and the cycle track was pretty poor quality; but it was right by the river's edge and I felt it was safer there than on the road, even though I saw there were lots of cyclists on the road, above me. At least the wind had dropped in the shelter of the valley. After about 10 miles, the cycle track was squeezed awy from the river, under the motorway and railway, and up to the secondary road, and I then realised why I'd seen so many cyclists - it was closer to motor traffic for the day! I don't know if this happens every Sunday, but it was a delight to get some space and bowl along a car-free road. It had stayed dry most of the afternoon, but as I reached Boppard there was a crack of thunder and within a couple of minutes I couldn't see the other side of the valley, so I found an Hotel.
