I was glad to have had the rest day, because Thursday was a nightmare.
It rained pretty much all day and I went through the worst part of the Rhine, the industrial heartland around Duisburg where the Ruhr joins the Rhine. The river-banks seemed like an endless succession of heavy engineering and chemical factories, many of which front straight onto the river necessitating a diversion and frequently getting totally disoriented. I presume the people who put of the cycling signs think that only a madman would try to negotiate the area on a bike, so there wasn't much help there, either.
Combined with this, an increasing headwind added to the miseries of the rain, and although I had aimed to get to Dusseldorf by nightfall, I gave up about 15 miles short at Kaiserswerth.
