Tuesday turned out to be the nicest day of the week, and I left Arnhem in warm sunshine, crossing the Issel (see the photo with dedicated cycle bridge) and followed the Pannerden Canal until it met the Rhine, proper. Most of the way here was along the top of the flood dyke which is usually a km away from the river proper and only really wide enough for a cycle path, but it's used by local traffic as well, and I realised I'd passed into Germany when a Deutche Post van squeezed past me on his delivery round.

The countryside is flat, flat (apart from the dykes) and it was strange to see the bridges of ships appearing as if in the middle of the fields...

Not only is the river wider here, but the bicycle traffic started in earnest, and with it lots of places along the way for stopping off. I had a bite of lunch at Tolkamer, and then went on through Emmerich where Germany's longest suspension bridge spans the river. (All the bridges are, of course, new. In 1945 there wasn't a single bridge left intact over the Rhine from the North Sea to Switzerland)

After my experience with the Hotel in Arnhem, I'd booked ahead and stopped in Wesel, and decided Wednesday would be a "rest day". I needed it, and slept and read most of the day.

Sounds great!
After reading what a fab time you had, me and hubby are going to visit Wesel from Holland. Brilliant.
