Getting in to this old city was quite the challenge for those of us who just spent two days wandering a city of canals on foot and by boat. We were reminded of how tight these old streets of Italy are and how crazy the Italian drivers are..oh, and the scooters: they have the (self appointed) right of way.

We have just begun to experience this beautiful city, but find the sounds of Italian opera street performers, the owners of the quaint ristorantes to be all so pleasant, and the architecture spell-binding.

We toured the area of the Duomo today. This gorgeous cathedral (constructed beginning in the 11th century) is constructed of red, green and white marble with mosaic detail that tease the eyes. On the inside: frescoes, and hidden beneath the floors, the newly discovered and currently under renovation, original 6th century baptistry...history that is hard to wrap your mind around being from the "new world" where "old" to us is 1700's.

But to truly appreciate the Duomo (dome) and its surroundings, we climbed the campanile (belltower): 276 ft, 414 steps to the top. From there you can enjoy the vast dome of the cathedral the marble detail of the building, the red tile roofs of Florence, as far as the eye can see and the backdrop of the green Tuscan hills. The view was fantastic and we were able to appreciate all of the churches and buildings that we otherwise would not have been able see, tucked away, from the ground.

We must give mention to the food here.. it has been so delizioso! We're enjoying risotto and gnocchi al dente, and traditional secondi piatti (the main course)... and lots of supertuscans and chianti.
