This morning we set out by foot to the Via Mala Gorge on loose directions from the hotel. We didn't get very far before we realized it was going to be a long hike. We decided to take the car instead which is when W noticed a sign for a castle. We drove up the mountain looking for, twisting and turning along a narrow road with a series of switchbacks cutting through steep hills of green. We never did find anything resembling a castle, but we did get a great view of the valley below us.

Once back at the bottom of the hill we drove a short distance out of Thusis to the Viamala Gorge. There is a car park in front of a small kiosk where we paid 5CHF to walk down 321 steps to the Rhine river where it was being squeezed through a gorge less than 1m wide and 300m high. It is quite loud at the bottom due to a decent sized waterfall crashing down from the top of one of the 300m high walls. It was really cool to see up close but then we had to climb back up the 321 steps and it wasn't as fun as I first thought.

Back on solid ground, we continued our road journey south to Bellinzona, best known for its three remarkable castles. The skies had been relatively clear for us in Thusis and in Bellinzona our good luck continued. We had lunch and took the elevator up to the Castelgrande (I didn't even notice the elevator there last time!) where we spent some time wandering the grounds. Even for my second visit it was still really cool and I think I could go back again if any friends need a guide...

We decided to take the stairs down because its a lot faster going down than up but we still felt like we got a bit of exercise. The weather stopped cooperating while mom was drawn into the shops in the old town square. We pulled her away with some force and headed for Locarno, our final destination of the day.
