Next stop: Bellinzona - to check out the castles. We only visited one, the largest of the three. Castelgrande sits on a high hill above the city square and offers great views from the top. There are still higher hills surrounding, and on them you can see parts of the other two castles, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro. Together the three make a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once at the top of the hill and on the walls of Castelgrande, we realized we had taken the long route up. Perhaps this was easier on the legs because we climbed up the hills over switchbacks instead of up steep stairways, but we knew what route we'd be taking down! The large square below the castle, right next to where we parked, has a staircase and a steep but direct path leading to the castle.

Castelgrande is a very large structure with stretches of bright green lawn between the high walls that spread from corner to corner along the hilltop, interrupted only by the high towers of the castle.

There is also an outer wall that we walked along for a long time. It is quite wide, also with lush manicured grass along the path, and you can walk either on the wall or through it in long dark tunnels. We did not walk the entire length as it seemed to go on and on forever, and we wanted to take a peak inside the tunnels.

Once we returned to the square below we stopped for lunch in one of the many sidewalk cafes before continuing on our road trip.
