I also discovered in my research that this is a less crowded time of year to visit. I would hate to see Venice in the summer when it is crowded, because in early March the narrow passages and even the wider lanes are already full of people and it is difficult to walk anywhere at a normal pace. People are, understandably, constantly stopping to admire their surroundings and forgetting that there is an entire crowd of people blocked behind them. It's not so bad if you are also walking around with the sole purpose of taking in your surroundings, but if you are actually trying to get somewhere it can be frustrating
But to visit it was marvelous! The locals are suprisingly friendly to the tourists - surprising to me, anyway, simply because of my previous statement - and there is so much to see, all set in beautiful surroundings. I spent two full days on my feet, walking around, exploring the quieter nooks and crannies and the large, crowded squares. I only left the main island to take a little ferry around it.
The hostel I stayed at was a lot of fun and included breakfast and dinner. I was really lucky too because the staff were excellent cooks! For dinner we ate at a big buffet table so we could get to know everyone else. We ended up playing cards and talking late into the night on Saturday. I will leave it to the pictures to tell where I went and what I saw.
