Today I got to experience Warsaw in daylight. I got up fairly early and found some breakfast at the deli next to the hostel. Then I took out the free guidebook I got at the airport and followed the Royal Route past some of Warsaw's most beautiful buildings. It starts in Old Town at the Royal Castle which is now a museum and also houses concerts. It didn't appear to be open though but they were busy setting up an outdoor stage in the square in front of the castle.
I passed by several churches and palaces. Since it was Sunday I couldn't go inside the churches or else I'd be interrupting services and I didn't want to do that. But the building exteriors were impressive enough. The only problem was the blistering cold. When I first stepped out of the hostel it didn't seem too bad to me but once you start walking and the wind hits you it's impossible to stay warm. Even with a cami, long sleeved shirt, two hoodies and a jacket on, jeans, warm socks, a toque, scarf, and gloves
Once I was freezing so much I couldn't operate my camera, I went over to central station to see if I could take a train to Bucharest. I can but it is almost as expensive as flying so I decided against it. However when I went over there I discovered a massive mall. The shopping complex is 4 or 5 stories and filled with shops I love so I warmed up in there and tried to find more layers. But everyone is doing their Christmas shopping and it is insanely busy and I only made the effort to stand in line for a fitting room once. After that I just browsed.
Warsaw is a fairly easy city to navigate until you want to cross the street. Many streets you can cross above ground so those are fine but when you have to go underground everything gets confusing. I make a note to myself where I want to end up before going under. You would think there are really only three routes you could take from your starting point underground. But once you get underground you realize there are more like 12 tunnels. How is that even possible? I don't know. But it is so. And they aren't small tunnels. They are lined with shops and fast food joints. When you come up you reorient yourself and if you came out the wrong passage, you just go back under and try again.
