The hostel was welcoming, clean and friendly and we spent the next seven days partying our way around Rio, and oh my do the Brazilians love to party. One day it was far too intense for me so we stayed sober and walked around Inpanema beach with 80,000 drunk partygoers. The normally quiet city is littered, smelly and very very noisy. Fancy dress is the norm and the effort and imagination of the Brazilians I have to applaud.
Blocos (the parties) are pre-arranged street parties with huge bands of drummers, dancers, drinks and beautiful chaos. The mood is ecstatic and electric, fuelled by much alcohol and apparently a general need to cause mayhem before lent
Blocos were sometimes less than 100 people sometimes 1.5 million people. My personal favourites were one when me and Louise got to play some drums in Santa Teresa and The Beatles bloco just by our hostel.
Drinks were just over $1.20 on the street, so not too expensive, food was always pizza, pizza and pizza $3-3.50 a slice- vegetarian food is very limited but I had guessed it would be so.
We met such fantastic locals over these few days and had such fun, maybe for the money people would say it is far too much money (I think this) but Louise loved it.
After carnival we were more than ready to leave the noise and chaos behind and head to a beach so we booked a 19hr bus to Florianopolis for $100 (ouch)
