DAY 1 Bula from the islands of Fiji!!!
After a VERY stressful few months, we finally got our passports..... 20mins before check in time! Phew! We could escape the country after all!! Guarding them with our lives we boarded the plane in Brissy for a 4 hour flight to paradise.
Even before touch down, we realised how relaxing the trip would be. "Fiji time" runs arounds 30 to 45 mins behind than the rest of the world. What's a watch again? The music and flower leis were almost as chilled as a freshly mixed bundy.
Even Ozzy Osbourne and his goth looking band only needed half as many drugs as usual. (We stalked them from the plane to Nadi town).
After a lazy plane trip, we were shocked awake by our hotel shuttle driver as he weaved between stray cows on the road, sped round corners on the wrong side of the road, tailed the cars in front by half a metre, and didn't follow a single road rule!!
(Do they have road rules in Fiji ?? They certainly don't have seatbelts!! All we've gathered is that cows have right of way.)
ZZzzzzzzz......
DAY 2 The next morning we woke at the crack of dawn "Fiji time" (11am) and had a leisurely stroll along the beach. Three hours later, after Choompie passed out naked from exhaustion on a beach front massage table (while Kate fell out of the hammock laughing at her), we found water.
Next was a quick ride into town for linner ("Fiji time" lunch = 3pm) which we didn't have because we were bombarded by so many friendly locals offering us free kava ceremonies and necklaces.
After our mouths were numb from drinking kava, and we had sucessfully passed our colds on to everyone in the tribe, we bought coke and twisties for tea and collapsed in our beds at 4.30pm. (Surprise surprise we were up at 9pm, for more twisties and to master our poker skills for when we get back to Cairns. We didn't sleep for the rest of the night!)
DAY 3 Early start today - 8am tour pick up (arrived at 8.50am - we forgot about "Fiji time" and ended up with indigestion from wolfing down our free pancakes). The tour took us out bush to the traditional villages with 3 world outrigging champions from Cairns (small world!), and a family of 4 from Sydney who didn't know what paw-paws, banana plants or prickles were!!
Choompie got half her hair braided and now looks more Fijian than Aussie.
We trekked through knee deep mud, rafted and swam with the anacondas, and explored caves where cannibals used to live and kill!! Then we ate a banana.
THE UNFORGETTABLE:
QUOTES In response to . . .where are you from again? "Cairns - K A I R N S" (Kate's blonde moment!) "Are we supposed to be flying upside down?" (Julia's blonde moment)
"Thank you, have safe travels, sleep well.... and wake up tomorrow" -- (Fiji tour guide).
