I decided to come back to Cuenca with one of the people I met on the Galapagos boat tour. Juli from Canada was heading this way and so I thought I would too and helped make my mind up on my route to Peru. I was going to go directly from Guayaquil but wasn't too happy about the stories id heard about people getting robbed or ripped off by taxi drivers at the boarder on the Pan America route so this way provides a different route to Peru via Loja and then the boarder crossing at Macara supposedly a quieter and safer option.
