Brilliant aqua blue waters, endless sandy beaches and lots of sun.  An island paradise.  Well it took me about four days or so to start enjoying my surroundings.

We could have arrived on the island and spent a few days touring since I had never been to Hawaii.  But instead, we hit the ground and starting looking for housing.  Not a good idea.

First, we had no idea where we wanted to live.  We spent two days searching for housing in Waikiki.  As it turns out, we both disliked Waikiki and all the crowds and noise.  Yes, it is one of the most famous beaches in the world, but it's definitely not a city that I want to live in.

We finally  hopped on a bus to Kailua.  As we existed the hustle and bustle of the city, my whole body began to relax.  I started to see the Hawaii of my dreams, lush mountains and blue waters.  I began to breathe in the sweet sea air.  I didn't feel trapped anymore.

We walked the streets looking for a place to live.  We talked to people on the beach.  We imagined ourselves settled in a quaint seaside cottage.  Then we got back on the bus and headed to Waikiki.  We stayed in three different hotels in the city.  By night 4 we were fed up paying for hotel rooms in a city that we didn't want to be in.  And the last room was so small that it had two twin beds.  For two nights, Thomas and I squeezed into a twin bed because neither of us was willing to share with Mecca.  I still don't get how she ends up perpenducular across the bed.

Anyway, Craigslist is our friend.  We combed Craigslist day and night looking for a place in Kailua.  We finally found a little bed and breakfast that sounded reasonable.  I was so excited that I called the guy pretty late to see if it was still available.  It was!  We rented a car the next day and moved out to Kailua to a converted house owned by Doug and Bird.  Our room has a kitchenette and private bath and sits on the channel.  I sit on the back patio and meditate in the mornings. We call it home for now.

Aloha! So glad you found your place outside of the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. We've visited once before and though the beach is beautiful, it was way too many tourist and crowds. Can't wait to read your next blog!!!

I am so glad to hear from you guys. And, I'm glad you're having a great time. I agree ... leave 'hustle and bustle' in your rear view and head for the unknown. That's my idea of a serious get away. Take care and tell Mecca that her holiday gift awaits. Hope to see you in ATL real soon. Smooches to each of you. Miss you madly!

I sooooo acknowledge you guys for embarking on the unknown. What better place to do it! When you're done, I expect a book on how to do Hawaii "cheap." It would give a lot people access that never thought they could swing it!!! Can't wait to watch the journey unfold!
