Trip End
Dec 20, 2008
My week of doing nothing but wandering about is over. Classes have begun. I have only been to one lecture for each, so it is a little early to judge them, but some sound more interesting than others.
Schedule (so far):
Monday 14.00-16.00 Nature-Society Geographies (NSG)
Tuesday 9.00-10.00 Global Enivronmental Processes (GEP)
12.00-13.00 Natural Hazards (NH)
14.00-17.00 GEP Practical (Lab)
Wednesday 18.00-20.00 Rugby Practice or Game
Thursday Possible NH Practical
11.00-12.00 GEP
Friday Possible NH Practical
11.00-12.00 NH
12.00-13.00 GEP
18.00-21.00 Rugby Practice
Saturday Some sort of club, tavel, gym, or homework activity. Possibly a combination of those.
Sunday Rugby Games
I am sure my evenings will fill up with activites such as those listed on Saturday also.
So far, all my classes seem interesting, but the one that seems least interesting is natural hazards. There might be a lot of talk about geology and tectonic plate movements, which occur at a thrilling speed of cm/yr. I'll continue to try it out this week though, and then we will see. If I am going to drop one and switch, it would be this one, but I need to decide quickly. I might try to take a chem, math, or ecology class instead. The only downside to that is that I might then have a class on my beautiful rugby only Wednesday. For my NSG class there is a lot of reading, but it looks like they are mostly from journals rather than books. Hopefully they are all in e-journals. That would be nice. There are essays for all the classes, so I will have to make sure not to fall behind in anything, but they are not impossible. I believe the longest is 2500 words, so about 5-6 double paced pages, and then there are 2 hour exams at the end, just like finals. While I was walking around King's Buildings (KB) today, I decided that it's a very nice campus. They have a ton of buildings, lots of cafes and even a pub and a lounge, and a couple of libraries, in which I saw a few of my good ol' reliable ChE books. I actually checked out my first book from the Main library today (very exciting, isn't it?). Tuesdays are probably going to be my toughest days just because I am going to have to hang out at KB so long, but at least there are places to go while I am waiting between classes. I do miss having both the gym and my classes so close to me though. If the KB were right next to me, then it would be just like Slivka with SPAC and Tech right there...Ah well. I'll let you know whether I stick with the classes or switch. I better get started reading tonight.

Don't Be Dissing Plate Techtonics!
It's how we all got here, right? Surfin The Plats from Gonwanaland? And didn't plate techtonics have a major impact in 'Under A Green Sky'?
Plates move, gasses escape, plants/ biota die. Or
looking at the brighter side, plates move, gasses escape, chemicals combine into RNA strands, then DNA strands, and voila - primordial soup! MMMM Good!
Or you could chuck the Plate Tech for a Geology - James Hutton - Scottish Enlightenment Hero course - Siccar Point where he figured out time is RIGHT THERE!
The Silurian and Devonian stratification are named after geological formations in Wales, so maybe there are field trips - worth checking out.
Keep Them Posts coming !
Classes Two
It looks like you have night classes! Tuesday 4:00 - 7:00 pm - that's a lab right? And you also have a 3 hour class twice a week from 12:00 - 3:00 ?
Do you get to wear robes, like they do in Harry Potter? And are you joining the Quiditch Team? If it IS like Harry Potter, please use some of your New Magic to make John McCain look old, wrinkly and act stupid. Oh. Never mind on that last one.
So, how far is it, time-wise from living quarters, excuse me, 'your flat', to the King's Buildings area?
And re: 'Beautiful Rugby Only Wed' - Shouldn't you be more concerned about a 'Recovery Day From Beautiful Only Rugby Wed?' Or do you just heal quicker from broken legs and twisted ankles in Scotland?
BUT, the Very Bestest thing I think is it looks like you have plenty of time to do stuff, so good on you!
