As we pass through larger villages, Janice gets catcalls from groups of men if she cycles on her own. It desn't seem to happen if I cycle beside her. This is the first day that this has been an issue. She has been careful to dress as conservatively as possible given that she is cycling. By contrast, village women, paricularly tea pickers would interact with her far more if she alone, sometimes clapping, cheering and waving.
After another 15km in tar-melting heat we are all struggling and are grateful when Sampath pulls us in before a main road. We are driven for 20min to our hotel, the very smart Galle Lighthouse. It is right on the coast about 3km from Galle itself and there is a background noise of crashing waves everywhere. Our room is the most luxurious yet. We have a very pleasant relaxing afternoon reading our books, revelling in inactivity. Meal in the hotel 4 courses including soup.
107km today, 621km so far. Rest day tomorrow followed by short ride on Friday.
